Edward S.Morse named pottery that he discovered at Shell Mounds of Omori “Cord Marked Pottery”. Then we call the era when those pottery were made “Jōmon era”.
モース博士は大森貝塚で発見した土器を “Cord Marked Pottery” と名づけた。それで我々はその土器が作られた時代を “縄文時代” と呼んでいる。

※訳語は当初 “索紋” があてられていたが、その後 “縄紋” があてられ、現在は “縄文” という呼称が定着している。

学習の第一歩は誰かを手本に倣う事から始まる。

※習(なら)う事は倣(なら)う事でもある。この二つの言葉は本来同じ言葉であったと言われる。また “学(まな)ぶ” も “真似(まね)ぶ” が変化して出来た言葉で、学習が模倣から始まるという良い証左でもある。

※※なお英語の “learn” の語源は古英語の “leornian 学ぶ・教える(原義は「人の歩む道を導く」または「足跡をたどり経験を積む」” から来ており、19世紀初頭までの英語には “学ぶ” と “教える” に言語上の明確な区別はなかった。
