※元は中国のことわざだが英語圏でもよく引用される。アメリカではエレノア・ルーズベルトの死後、アドレイ・スティーブンソンが国連総会の席上で彼女を称える時に使った言葉として有名である。- “She would rather light candles than curse the darkness, and her glow has warmed the world. / 彼女は暗いと不平を言うより蝋燭に火を灯す人であった。そんな彼女の灯りが世界を暖めてきたのです。” 日本ではカトリック教会による心のともしび運動の「暗いと不平を言うよりも、進んで明かりを点けましょう」というスローガンで有名。
