ロビンソンの生きた時代には第一次大戦と世界大恐慌があり、金本位制による兌換紙幣から不換紙幣への過渡期でもある。第二次大戦後にアメリカは再び金本位制に戻り、IMFの設立を通じて各国の為替を固定して間接的に各国も金本位制に戻ったが、1971年のニクソン・ショックによりアメリカは金との兌換を停止し、1973年には各国通貨も変動為替相場制に移行したため金本位制は終焉を迎えた。

courage

勇気、勇敢さ、度胸

Courage is not simply one of the virtues, but the form of every virtue at the testing point.
勇気とは単なる美徳の中の一つではない、個々の美徳が備わっているか否かを試す試金石である。

※アイルランドの作家 C. S. Lewis の言葉
後半部分は直訳すると “試練における全ての美徳の姿なのだ” となるが、解り難いので意訳した。論語にも”義を見てせざるは勇なきなり” という言葉があるが、それぞれの美徳を実際の行動へ反映させる勇気があるかどうかで、それらの美徳が真に身に備わったものか否かが試されるのだと解釈した。
