※アメリカの医療制度では、メディカルスクール卒業後の1年間 Internship と呼ぶ臨床研修を行い、その後各科に分かれて3～6年程度 Residency と呼ばれる臨床経験を積み、医師免許試験とはまた別の認定試験を経て一般的な医師としての活動が認められるようになる。さらに専門的な高度医療を目指すものは Fellowship と呼ばれる3～10年程度の臨床経験を積んで、認定試験を経て専門医としての活動が認められるようになる。
