ロビンソンの生きた時代には第一次大戦と世界大恐慌があり、金本位制による兌換紙幣から不換紙幣への過渡期でもある。第二次大戦後にアメリカは再び金本位制に戻り、IMFの設立を通じて各国の為替を固定して間接的に各国も金本位制に戻ったが、1971年のニクソン・ショックによりアメリカは金との兌換を停止し、1973年には各国通貨も変動為替相場制に移行したため金本位制は終焉を迎えた。
