アイソーポスの生涯は謎が多いが、元はサモスの市民イアドモンの奴隷だったという。上記の言葉は “犬とオオカミ” の最後の言葉である。少し長くなるが、全文を紹介しよう。

The Dog and the Wolf
A gaunt Wolf was almost dead with hunger when he happened to meet a House-dog who was passing by. “Ah, Cousin,” said the Dog. “I knew how it would be; your irregular life will soon be the ruin of you. 犬とオオカミ
痩せ衰えたオオカミが空腹で死にそうになっている所に、一匹の飼い犬が通りかかった。

犬「やあ兄弟。日々をふらふらと送ってるからそんな事になるんですよ。私の様にきちんとした仕事に就いて、毎日きちんとした食事をもらっちゃどうですか？」

オオカミ「まったくお前さんの言う通りだよ。ただそんな仕事があるのかい？」

犬「簡単な事ですよ。ひとつ私のご主人様に頼んでみますから、一緒に働きましょう。」

こうして犬とオオカミは連れ立って町へ行くことになった。町へ向かう道の途中でオオカミは犬の首に毛が薄くなっている部分がある事に気づき、どうしたのか尋ねた。

犬「大した事じゃありませんよ。夜中に私が逃げ出さないようにと、鎖につなぐ首輪が少しこすれるってだけです。すぐに慣れますよ。」

オオカミ「それ本当かい？そんな事なら僕はさよならさせてもらうよ、飼い犬君。」

– 太った奴隷になるより、飢えても自由の方が良い。
