elder　年上の・年長者

年上の、年長の、(同名または同姓の家族・兄弟などで)年上の方の、先輩の、年長者、年寄り、先輩、(部族や教会の)長老

※似たような語に old や older があるが、elder には以下の様な特徴がある。こうして書くと少々ややこしいが、語の持つニュアンスが得られたならばあまり深く考える必要は無い。

1.名詞を修飾する限定用法には用いるが、主語や目的語の性質を述べる叙述用法には用いない
2. 比較構文を作らない (○→ older than ～、x→ elder than ～)
3.もっぱら人に用いて、物に対して用いない

年寄りが座りながら見ているものは、若者が立ち上がっても見ることはできない。

語源　古英語　eldra (eald=old の比較級)
※older は古英語の eldra が母音変異して生まれた語であり、elder は元の母音が生き残ったまま変化した語である。私見を言うとそれ故に elder には古風な響きがあり、年長者に対する敬意の様なニュアンスがあるのではないかと思う。

mature　成熟した

※幼稚園は kindergarten、保育園は nursery school、託児所は day-care center と訳される事が多いが、就学前教育及び保育の制度と実態は国や地方によって様々なので厳密に区別する事は難しい。おおまかに言って就学前教育にも重点を置いた施設を米国では kindergarten、英国では nursery school と呼び、主に子供を預かるだけの施設を day nursery または day-care center と呼ぶ。

※少々ややこしいが、日本語の “幼児” にも厳密な定義と一般的に使用される場合の意味にはある程度の差がある事を思い出して欲しい。医者や教育者や子育て中の親を除き、”幼児” という語の厳密な定義を意識する人は少ない。他言語習得においては、言葉の定義を厳密に覚える事よりも曖昧なニュアンスを捉える事の方が大切だと私は思う。この語の場合は infant = 幼児 と覚えておいて、後で必要が生じれば辞書をひけば良い。

裸の幼児が後ろにでんぐり返しをするのを見れば、どうしてこの世に衣服が存在するのかあたなにも解るだろう。
