※ warranty と guarantee の意味の違いを説明できる人はネイティブにも少ない。おおまかに言うと warranty は製品の品質の保証をしたり(言い換えると購入者の権利に対する保証)、不動産取引に関する権利の保証、法的根拠に基づく執行権の保証など、権利や権限(rights)に対する保証という意味で使われる事が多い。対して guarantee は “～である事に対する保証、～である事を保証する” というニュアンスが主となっている。

※地域にもよるが現在は guarantee を使う方が一般的である。また guaranty が “保証する” という風に動詞として使われる事はあまり無い。他には guarantee の発音のアクセントが後半の tee であるのに対し、guaranty のアクセントは冒頭の gua である。これらはかつての英語で guarantee が動詞、guaranty が名詞だった事の名残であると思われる。

Coward (coward=臆病者)とはすごい苗字だと思ったが、本名である。そこで Coward 家の由来ついて調べてみたらノルマン・コンクエスト後にイギリスに移住してきたノルマン人が先祖で、苗字は古英語の “cuhyrde / 牛の見張り番” という語が変化したものらしい。
