キップリングの “If” という題名の詩の一節である。この一節はウィンブルドンのセンターコートに向かう選手が開く扉の上に掲げられている。少々長いのでページ下部に全文と訳を掲載する。

もし群集に語る事になっても、節度を失わなければ

※この詩はキップリングが息子のジョン(愛称はジャック、当時17歳)を第一次世界大戦に送り出す際に贈ったものと言われる。そしてジョンは1915年、フランスのルースの戦いにおいて行方不明の戦死扱いとなった。それからしばらくキップリング夫妻は息子の無事を信じて探し続けたが、1919年にジョンの死を受け入れて、以降は大戦の戦死者を追悼する事業に尽力するようになったという。このエピソードは「マイ・ボーイ・ジャック」というタイトルで戯曲化され、近年映画化もされている。
